Identification of a new HIV type 1 BF intersubtype circulating recombinant form (CRF44_BF) in Chile

HIV-1 BF intersubtype recombinants are frequent in Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil, where among a high diversity of BF unique recombinant forms (URFs), eight circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) have been characterized. Here, we describe a new one, designated CRF44_BF, identified in HIV-1 samples from Chile.

Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 in Breeding Turkeys, Valparaiso, Chile

Abstract
Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus was detected in breeding turkeys on 2 farms in Valparaiso, Chile. Infection was associated with measurable declines in egg production and shell quality. Although the source of infection is not yet known, the outbreak was controlled, and the virus was eliminated from the birds.

Estrategias para el enfrentamiento del cólera. La experiencia chilena desde una perspectiva de salud pública

Strategies for dealing with cholera disease. A public health perspective of the Chilean experience During the latest Latin American epidemic of cholera (1991), more than 70,000 cases were identifi ed and over 6,000 deaths occurred. Cholera started in Peru and expanded to the rest of Latin American countries, including Chile. Compared to Peru, the epidemic in Chile had minor consequences due to the strategies adopted by the National System of Health Services, together with other public institutions.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection of B cell clonality in Sjögren's syndrome patients: a diagnostic tool of clonal expansion

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by clonal B cell attack of the exocrine glands and dysregulated expression of B cell-activating factor (BAFF). Based upon the current data of increased rates of lymphoid malignancy, as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is associated with SS, we propose the detection of clonal rearrangements of immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) gene in those patients as a predictor of malignant clonal expansion.

Scatter and staff dose levels in paediactric interventional cardiology, a multicentre study

Interventional cardiology procedures usually imply high doses to the staff, as paediatric cardiologists need to stay closer to the patient than during adult  procedures. Also, biplane systems are used that imply an additional source of staff doses. The objective of this paper is to measure scatter doses in four X-ray systems, using polymethyl methacrylate phantoms with thicknesses ranging from 4 to 16 cm to simulate paediatric patients, for the different acquisition modes.

Anopheles atacamensis, a new species from northern Chile

Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) atacamensis, a new species in the subgenus Nyssorhynchus, is described and validated using morphological characters of the male and female adult, male genitalia and immature stages. Molecular characterization employing sequences of the ITS2 rDNA and COI mtDNA are provided.

Reporte de cuatro casos clínicos de bacteriemia por Hafnia alvei en una unidad cardio-quirúrgica pediátrica

Introduction: The gram negative bacillus Hafnia alvei, is the only species of the genus Hafnia, family Enterobacteriaceae. It occasionally behaves as an opportunistic pathogen in humans, causing intestinal and respiratory infection and sepsis. It rarely causes bacteremia, usually of unknown focus.

Objective: To describe a nosocomial outbreak of four pediatric patients with bacteremia by Hafnia alvei.

Subtipificación molecular de Salmonella enterica serotipo Enteritidis en el período post epidémico

Background: In the last two decades, Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis has become one of the main agents causing food borne diseases worldwide. This agent is transmitted mainly by contaminated meat and poultry.

Aim: To determine the genetic subtypes of Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis, circulating in Chile between 2001 and 2003, a post epidemc period.

Staff Radiation Doses in Interventional Cardiology: Correlation With Patient Exposure

In pediatric interventional cardiology, cardiologists need to stay closer to the patient than during adult catheterization, and the use of biplane systems increases the scatter radiation. Occupational radiation risk is rather high, and estimation of lens doses becomes necessary. Deriving factors for assessing these doses from the patient doses displayed in catheterization laboratories can help in preserving staff radiation safety.
